Flag maintenance

Directions for the use of printed flags

On placing your flagpoles or other attachments you have to think of leaving enough space for your flag to fly properly. Poles have to stand apart more than twice the width of the flag and positioned in a way that they do not touch neighboring edifices or flagpoles even when strong winds blow.

For flags on poles at places that are exposed to strong winds, we recommend hoisting flags in oblong format or hoisting flags.
For flags on poles at places with only light winds we recommend bannerflags with security ringband and guide strip or with an additionally sewn on belt, loops and spring hooks.

In order to prolong the durability of your flags, take them off the poles when extreme weather conditions are forecasted!

Maintenance of flags and transparents in digital printing

In digital printing, the color is directly transferred onto the fabric by the printing machine. The printing is done with a high resp. saturated color application. Thus, the printing colors obtain the desired intensity and grade of saturation.
The color needs a certain period of time to properly dry. You should now hoist your flag on the pole, unwashed, as delivered by us, so that it is exposed to wind and weather. The surplus pigments are being removed and worn off from the flag by the weather (sun, rain, and wind) in the course of time. The color permeates further into the weaving then and conjoins with the fabric fibre.

Only after this proper drying period - not below 14 days - can the flag be taken from the pole and, if necessary, washed at 30°C with or without a mild detergent.

Depending on the place it may be necessary to take off and wash the flags once a month. Proceed as follows:

  • Remove all detachable metal parts such as spring hooks, rings, etc.
  • Soak the flag in cold tap water for a couple of hours in order to dissolve persistant staining.
  • Wash synthetic and ship's flag fabrics at 30°C with a normal detergent, in a household washing machine.
  • Only tumble flags a little, it's best to hang them up again dripping wet.

Repairing printed flags

When the flags start to unravel at the corners, take them off the pole and cut the torn edges off before more damage is caused. Then, add new seams (except for flags made in airflag hole material).

We gladly carry out the washing and necessary repair works for you on demand - expertly and fast. Stained and torn flags lose their advertising effects and communicate a bad impression. Only by regularly maintaining and caring for your flags can they remain a signpost.

Maintenance and storage of embroidered flag

Each embroidered flag, be it new or restored, should basically be stored dry and well aired. A closet made of wood is ideal. It should be big enough to allow the horizontal hanging of the flag. Wood allows "breathing" and balances differences in air moisture. (Never keep a flag stored in a rolled-up state!). The closet should not shut airtight. A close meshed grid enables air to permeate and keeps out moths and other vermin at the same time. The flag closet must not be exposed to direct sunlight. UV light bleaches every fabric in the course of time. It should be hung up a couple of centimeters off the wall (especially in basement rooms or chambers without heating). Avoid high temperature fluctuations and moisture at all costs!

Protect the flag from stains or wetness when the weather is bad by transporting it in a transparent cover or sack. SIn case your flag was exposed to rain during a parade and has gone wet, it has to be allowed to dry thoroughly. It would be best to hang it horizontally in a room that is only moderately heated. It shouldn't be too warm in the room, otherwise sensitive fabrics might suffer. On no account must the flag be hung over a heating. As soon as the flag is dry it should be brushed against the direction of the velvet with a soft brush so that the fabric regains it former beauty. Only after being dry through and through may the flag be stored in the closet again. Never roll your flag during transport, only fold it lightly.

Flags made of velvet, pure silk, demi-silk (diagonal), cotton damask or flag rep must neither be washed nor chemically dry-cleaned. Never try yourself to remove stains by rubbing but ask for expert advice in a flag embroidery.
